The Human Placenta Project

Can VEGF be used as an early marker of preeclampsia?

The proper identification and clinical management of preeclampsia have been my passion since becoming an ob-gyn physician in 1987. The disproportionate deaths of pregnant women and new moms who look like me are unsettling. Early angiogenic markers that help identify increased risk factors for the diagnosis of preeclampsia would be monumental. I hope you will consider it as an area of future research, taking into consideration.... more »

The Human Placenta Project

Is VEGF the cause of multi-organ dysfunction during preeclampsia ?

The proper identification and clinical management of preeclampsia have been my passion since becoming an ob-gyn physician in 1987. The disproportionate deaths of pregnant women and new moms, especially women of color are unsettling. Early angiogenic markers that help identify increased risk factors for the diagnosis of preeclampsia would be monumental.

Extracting, isolating, and synthesizing substances in placenta for medicinal use

We are mainly interested in the postpartum placenta. We think it is an underused organ. Our research began as an attempt to understand why nonhuman mammalian mothers ingest the afterbirth at parturition. We have already found a substance in placenta and amniotic fluid (POEF, present in human afterbirth) that, when ingested by rats, enhances the central analgesic activity of delta and kappa opioids. This will possibly... more »

Integrated study of placenta and pregnancy, towards personalized medicine

Unlike any other pathologies, adverse pregnancy can be captured from its inception to its conclusion as these are well-defined start and endpoints. Additionally, pregnancy occurs in a defined time frame lasting less than a year (<42 weeks). Nearly all other pathologies develop over years or decades. Relative to other extensive population studies like the Framingham heart study following pregnancy from conception to delivery... more »

Placental malfunction

Very little knowledge is there at present regarding placental previa or abruption. Especially concealed placental abruption is a hard to identify condition where in most cases the damage is already done to both mom and baby before diagnosis. Even a medical examination of the placenta is not sufficient enough to find the root cause of abruption. In addition, there is insufficient test to check the functionality of the... more »

Applying a Systems-based Approach

We have begun to apply systems biology to identify potential biomarkers to enhance our understanding of the biology of placental development and improve the care of mother and developing fetus. Pregnancy, however, is like the 3-body challenge in physics as it intimately involves both the individual and interactive development of the pregnant mother, the fetus and the placenta. These interactions and their potential impact... more »

Big Data, AI/ML: Treasure Chest of Pandora's box?

Women's health and obstetrics in general, and the placenta, in particular, have not received the same level of research focus as many specific disease areas in spite of impacting much greater numbers of people because of appropriate limitation in experimental approaches. The measurement and aggregation of significant data over the course of a pregnancy (and post-partum) involving clinical and physiological biomarkers... more »

Immunological responses to nanomedicines in pregnant women

There is growing interest in using nanomedicines to treat pregnancy complications, with several different therapies showing success in pre-clinical models. However, we must remember that to date, all of the published safety data on different types of nanoparticles has been obtained from studies in non pregnant animals and humans. Given the significant changes in immune function noted in pregnancy, it is critical to determine... more »

Human Umbilical Cord Development

Very little is known about development of the human umbilical cord and insertion into the fetal abdominal wall, yet developmental abnormalities contribute to multiple recurring embryonic malformations, including limb-body wall complex, pentalogy of Cantrell and OEIS (omphalocele, exstrophy of bladder or cloaca, imperforate anus, and spinal defects). In addition, anomalies are more frequently associated with a two vessel... more »

Supporting People with Disabilities

The National Center for Medical Rehabilitation Research (located within the NICHD) would like to highlight three issues that may arise in the context of the Human Placenta Project:

• Ensure that people with disabilities (PWD) are included among the subject populations – and special efforts are made to support their reproductive health and opportunities. Often, PWD are not asked about reproductive health and are not offered... more »

Hearing all voices - Premeeting Discussion Summary - Tracy Bale and Ann Celi

Community Engagement Challenges and Opportunities

• BEGIN in this space, VALUE diverse populations and put them at the center of your efforts

o remember racial/ethnic cultural diversity is not always present in biobanks

• This takes real TIME, needs to be a concerted and consistent effort in relationship building, trust-building.

• Will need to build TRUST- this may include community leaders such as local church/faith... more »

Simultaneous maternal and fetal blood flow assessment in the placenta using umbilical vein Doppler trending idea

A big issue in assessment of placental abnormalities in vivo is that the placenta has two separate blood supplies, maternal and fetal. Presently, there are no easy ways to directly assess these contributing flows at the same time. If there were such a method, it could greatly enhance placental evaluation in a myriad of ways. For instance, it would be possible to show the effects of various therapies on both the maternal... more »
