NICHD STRIVE for Change

Take a Bold and High Risk Approach to Advance Sciences and Disrupt Old Ways Science trending idea

Description :

This feedback is related to discuss new approaches for community engagement with the goal to strengthen health disparity research with our partners.   For that, we will need to  trust our community partners and develop research by not evaluating the PI history in obtaining NIH funding, publication, environment, infrastructure and  apply an entire new, unbiased, creative and innovative approach to collaborate with our community partners and be humbly guided by them. The current NIH model to select, review and award grants does not work and will not work to represent a real human and ecological guided research agenda.

The current research culture is not conducive to nurture such partnerships. We need to have this discussion with the funding agencies  to have all parties equally involved  in the process for us to  practice REAL and MEANINGFUL health equity research.

1. What obstacles impede advancing health disparities research for NICHD populations?

What are some examples of community engagement models to strengthen health disparities research efforts (such as models for partnerships, collaboration)?

Perhaps,  consider current models,  but ensure that this research is not guided by the current evidence since current models do not represent the best practice. We are in the embryonic stage to be able to use current evidence to guide this science.

2.What innovative or novel approaches to research could be leveraged to mitigate health disparities in NICHD populations?

We will need to trust our community partners and develop research by not evaluating the PI history in obtaining NIH funding, publication, environment, infrastructure and apply an entire new, unbiased, creative and innovative approach to collaborate with our community partners and be humbly guided by them. The current NIH model to select, review and award grants does not work and will not work to represent a real human and ecological guided research agenda

3. What are the best opportunities to broaden community engagement in the research process?

As I previously mentioned, including them as a real partner and investigator in the process and the project.

4. What are some examples of community engagement models to strengthen health disparities research efforts (such as models for partnerships, collaboration)?

Be a good listener and give an opportunity for our partners to tell us how we should practice our research instead of us telling them how they should participate in our research.

5. What resources (e.g., tools, technology, human capital) are needed to advance the field of health disparities research for NICHD populations?

NEW tools and approaches that truly equally engage, recognize (authorship) our community partners in our grants. Current models does not recognize equally and with the correct inclusion our community partners.
