The Human Placenta Project

Developmental Impact of the Placenta

Please provide your feedback: :

A stated on other areas of the forum, though the placenta plays a central role in fetal development, there are still large gaps in knowledge on how altered placental function can directly impact key fetal organ development, particularly for the brain, pulmonary and cardiovascular systems. Supporting the ongoing creation of in vitro models coupling key components of the human placental ecosystem (i.e. primary decidual leukocytes, trophoblast cells, amniotic fluid) and human fetal developmental model systems (i.e. organoids, iPSCs) could be highly impactful for the goals of HPP and facilitate valuable cross talk with other institutes such as the NINDS and NHLBI.
